This community garden belongs to one of the famous flemish beguinages (NL: Begijnhof). These beguinages were places where religious women, whom didn’t want to live in enclosed convents, congregated. The one in the background of this photo is located in Diest, it was founded in 1253 and closed down in 1796. It’s one of 13 flemish beguinages that are protected under UNESCO. Nowadays, anyone can rent one of the historical houses, albeit under strict rules.
