Maastricht is a city in the Netherlands that dates back to Roman times when the first permanent bridge across the Meuse river (NL: Maas) was built here. Maastricht is considered the oldest settlement in the Netherlands and is also taken up in the ‘Most Ancient European Cities Network’. Although seemingly one church, this photo consist of 2 separate 13th century churches and are known locally as ‘twin churches’ (NL: kerkentweeling).
